At around 6 pm, Mr Johnson will host a televised press conference alongside Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, to address the public and answer questions.

What will the new measures be?

The Prime Minister is set to impose tougher restrictions for areas which have been worst-hit by coronavirus today, in an attempt to slow the spread of the virus across the country.

Areas will be placed under different restrictions depending on the severity of covid-19 in that particular area.

Tier 1

Areas in tier one are expected to continue with the current restrictions, including the rule of six and a 10 pm curfew for bars and restaurants.

Tier 2

Hospitality venues, including pubs and restaurants, are expected to remain open in two-tier areas.
