The Judith Mary II restaurant boat has been part of canal life in Whaley Bridge and New Mills for decades - now the boat is moving on to pastures new in Staffordshire.

Owner Suzy Kelsal who has worked every weekend on the boat for 15 years decided it was time to sell after her dad, Allen, wanted to retire after more than 40 years.

She said: “It is with a tinge of sadness that on Friday December, 20 December will be our last trip on the Judith Mary, sailing from Whaley Bridge.

A company spokesperson said: “We are excited to announce the arrival of Georgie Kate’s original ship sister The Judith Mary II from late spring 2025.

“Join us for a choice of afternoon tea, fish and chips or a two-course roast dinner whilst enjoying a two-hour cruise.”

Allen worked on the Judith Mary I as a chef and bought her and its subsequent sister the Judith Mary II in 1988.

Moored at Whaley Bridge Basin the boat brings between 7-8,000 people into the town every year for trips to New Mills and back.

In 1990 Judith Mary II famously hosted a visit from Princess Diana - who had a smoked salmon buffet on-board after crowning the town’s Rose Queen during its carnival.

The Judith Mary II went on sale last year but for a while did not have any buyers looking to take on the business.

Suzy added: “We thank all our customers who have sailed with us over the last 40 years and are bracing ourselves for the remainder of this year.

“Bring on the hot turkey sandwiches, mince pies and mulled wine.”

In January Suzy says she is looking forward to a well earned rest and not coming out and defrosting the inside of the windows before she sets sail.
