Apprentice - you’re hired

Despite the tough economic climate, more employers are recruiting apprentices in the East Midlands.

Figures from the National Apprenticeship Service show that in December 2009/2010 there was a 165 per cent increase in the number of companies searching for the next apprentice!

So, why are more employers looking to recruit apprentices?

Daniel Corlett, North Derbyshire Partnership manager for Derby County in the Community said: “Recruiting an apprentice allowed our organisation to up skill and train a new member of staff, meaning any skills and qualifications developed and acquired were those directly required by ourselves.”

The increase in the number of apprenticeships is also great news for 16- to 18-year-olds wanting to take their first steps on the career ladder as in December 2010, there were over 251 apprenticeship vacancies.
