Tideswell Community Players to re-enact wartime Christmas truce

Tideswell Community Players are to re-enact the unofficial truce between fighting troops on Christmas Day 1914 during the First World War.

German and British soldiers spontaneously laid down their arms and met each other to exchange Christmas greetings, token gifts and even have a game of football near the temporarily vacated trenches.

The portrayal of the truce takes place in St John the Baptist churchyard on Wednesday, December 17, at 6pm, concluding with carols.

This will be the final event in Tideswell Remembers, which commemorates the war’s centenary.
