Poignant pilgrimage to war graves in northern France
Members of the Royal British Legion and Friends of Oignies travelled to France to pay tribute to young soldiers from Buxton who lost their lives in the Second World War.
The party laid wreaths on the monument in Oignies, placed poppy crosses on the British graves and carried a Legion standard during the remembrance ceremony.
In the days leading up to May 28, 1940, Buxton soldiers were among those serving with the Sherwood Foresters who assisted French and Algerian allies in Oignies in a battle to hold back the German advance while the Allied Forces prepared to embark from Dunkirk.
Buxton and Oignies were twinned in 1968.
