Murder and revenge in gripping family drama

Terrible secrets are handed down through the generations in this radical, stripped back version of the first great work of theatre. Written two and a half thousand years ago, Aeschylus’ epic is as gripping and relevant as ever and has inspired countless dramas including most recently, Game of Thrones.

The Oresteia is on stage at HOME in Manchester until November 14.

Taking the translation by one of the great poets of the twentieth century, Ted Hughes, this swift-moving, newly cut version condenses the trilogy into one thrilling play.

Blanche McIntyre (Best Director TMA 2013 UK Theatre Awards; Critics’ Circle Most Promising Newcomer Award) directs an ensemble of actors including Lyndsey Marshal (Garrow’s Law, Rome) and Simon Trinder (Midwinter of the Spirit) who will be playing multiple roles that cross generations and genders. The central role of the chorus – the voice of the citizens – will be taken by the people of Manchester.
