Spotlight falls on iconic mill

MANUFACTURING is returning to New Mills’ iconic Torr Vale Mill.

But instead of the clatter of the cotton spinning machines, there will be the even noisier activity that is New Mills Festival’s popular lantern-making workshops.

Last year, nearly 900 people of all ages participated in the workshops, producing lanterns for the torch-lit procession which marks the culmination of the Festival. This year, organisers are hoping to break that record.

Between Friday September 14 and Sunday September 23, the mill, on Torr Vale Road, will be hosting lantern-making and pyrotechnic workshops.

Full workshop dates and times are available at

This year’s lantern procession through the Torrs will take place on Saturday September 29, meeting below New Mills Station at 7.30pm.

The procession concludes at Newtown Recreation Ground with a spectacular fireworks display at 8.40pm.
