ONE OF the cultural highlights in Buxton’s calendar, the Buxton Puppet Festival, returns for its ninth year next month.
The co-produced festival by Buxton Opera House and Buxton-based puppetry company Funny Wonders includes an array of colourful and creative performances and workshops taking place across the town between Monday July 25 and Saturday July 30.
Performances include a return visit from Presto Puppets with their version of the Arabian Nights tale Aladdin & His Wonderful Lamp on Thursday July 28 at 2pm.
Expect a fast-moving fantasy pantomime using a host of half-life-sized, exquisitely costumed rod puppet creations.
The show will be performed to a backdrop of beautiful Chinese silk pictures and uplifting ragtime music.
The Chalk Giants by Indefinite Articles is set to provide children with a creative twist on puppetry with its mix of storytelling, puppetry and on-screen images on Friday July 29 at 2pm.
This ‘terrific and alternative twist of a show’ will tell the traditional story of Jack & The Giants and other engrossing folk tales.
Free outdoor performances will include Sinbad the Sailor, Winter and Christmas Tales, The Mr Punch Show and Ali Baba & The Four Tea Thieves, plus there’ll be a colourful puppet parade by Presto Puppets.
A diverse mix of exciting workshops will be taking place throughout the festival, where young people can try their hand at making and performing their own specially-designed puppets including shadow, rod, glove and butterfly puppets.
