When I heard New Mills & District Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society were performing Grease I thought it was a very brave decision.
It is not the easiest of musicals to perform especially as it relies on a young cast, and getting young people involved in amateur dramatics is no easy task.
However, after seeing the show I am delighted to say they have pulled it off! I thoroughly enjoyed it, and myself and Linda (my wife) was singing along all the way through.
Danny (Ciaran Ashton) & Sandy (Jessica Holman) performed wonderfully from ‘Summer Nights’ through to ‘You’re the one That I Want’ with great support from the ‘T Birds’ and the ‘Pink Ladies’ who all gave sterling performances. Special mentions to Kenickie (Nick Ward) who was outstanding - ‘Greased Lightnin’ Wow! - also Rizzo (Amy McDonugh), Roger (Dom Dunne) impressed me singing ‘Mooning’ and the rest of the T Birds (Andrew Jorden & Sam Bowden) and the Pink Ladies (Jennifer Savill, Harriot Carter & Cathryn Yates).
‘Beauty School Drop Out’ was another favourite sung by Teen Angel (Matt Darsley) who was in great voice - I always enjoy his performances.
Other supporting roles that need a mention are Eugene (Connor Wyse) & Patty (Lou-Anne Binnes) who played their parts well.
One of the main reasons that this show works so well in New Mills is down to the production team, direction by Martyn Preston, staging/choreography by Angela Draper & musical director Tim Walker, who have all done an admiral job. Great sets built by the society and hired-in costumes give the whole show a ‘London’ feel.
I would strongly recommend that you find time to go and watch this production, you will have a great time.
