A batty tale of love, deception, revenge and misunderstanding is winging its way to Buxton Opera House as one of the most popular visiting opera companies – Opera della Luna – returns with their production of Die Fledermaus on Monday 23 May at 7.30pm.
The bat - Die Fledermaus - in question is a man dressed up as part of a practical joke which goes wrong.
His revenge involves deception, men seducing their own wives but most importantly, the amazing music of Johann Strauss.
Strauss illustrates the emotion behind the stories, at one point with a masterpieces of comic irony, at another turning a tit-for-tat exchange between two characters into an enchanting duet which is one of the highlights of the score.
Opera della Luna have earned themselves a matchless reputation, celebrating over 15 years of acclaimed productions of Gilbert and Sullivan and Offenbach.
Now turning their hand to the ‘Waltz King’ – Johann Strauss – this most sparkling of scores is given an entirely new and saucy setting directed by Jeff Clarke and designed by Gabriella Csanyi-Wills, the same team that created the company’s wonderful recent production of The Mikado.
As for the plot, well as one of the characters says, it’s best to blame it all on the Champagne.
• The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets for Die Fledermaus will be priced at £16.50 and £18.50 and discounts are available.
