Buxton Opera House will be livening up the long summer nights with a glittering selection of Gilbert and Sullivan shows next month.

Oxbridge Opera Company will be presenting The Sorcerer on Friday August 8 and Saturday August 9, complete with a full orchestra and some of the finest young professional singers in the country.

Touching, comic and containing some of the finest melodies Sullivan ever wrote, the piece tells the story of a magic salesman who brings a love potion to a rural village and people of all classes are powerless to its effects.

The Mikado will be performed from Thursday August 14 to Saturday August 16. Set in the zany flashy world of modern fashion houses and featuring costumes inspired by Jean Paul Gaultier, this is an energetic production promising a riot of gorgeous and bizarre creations.

A Feast of Gilbert and Sullivan on Sunday August 17 will recapture all the fun and magic of the original D’Oyly Carte Opera Company with the 37-piece British Philharmonic Orchestra performing sections of every Gilbert & Sullivan opera.

Finally, Derby Gilbert and Sullivan Company will return with performances of two contrasting G&S operas - the Pirates of Penzance on Thursday August 21 and Friday August 22 about a pirate and the Cornwall Constabulary both doing their duty, while The Yeomen of the Guard on Saturday August 23 tells the story of a strolling jester, against the backdrop of the Tower of London.

Tickets for all of the Gilbert & Sullivan shows, priced from £16 to £26, are on sale now. For reservations or more information, call the box office on 0845 127 2190 or visit
