FILM-LOVERS are invited to take their seats as Buxton prepares for a movie fiesta later this month.

Seventeen feature films from all corners of the globe will be screened at two venues in the town during the new Buxton Festival of World Cinema, a collaboration between Buxton Opera House and Buxton Film.

The festival kicks-off in the Paupers Pit Theatre, underneath the Old Hall Hotel, on Thursday November 8 with a double bill that has dance and music at the heart of its story-telling. The animated Chico & Rita follows a couple – one a singer the other a pianist – as they travel from Havana to New York and Paris. It is a passionate story with music from Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz greats.

Nine films will be screened at the Pavilion Arts Centre between Friday November 9 and Sunday November 11. Among the big attractions is Marley, a documentary on the life of the legend Bob Marley, which will be shown on November 9 and is a warts and all portrait of a complex man whose songs are loved by generations the world over.

Ken Loach’s most recent film The Angels’ Share, to be screened on November 10, was a prizewinner in Cannes and tells the story of a group of Glaswegians whose lives are shaped by crime, drink and unemployment.

Fans of Scandinavian crime thrillers will have the chance to see an adaptation of Jo Nesbo’s Headhunters on November 11. From the same stable as The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Headhunters is also due for an American re-make.

Other double bills in the Paupers Pit include Hitchcock’s Lifeboat and Shadow of a Doubt, as well as some contemporary time-travel sci-fi and two great anti-war films for Remembrance Sunday.

Tickets, priced £4, are available from Buxton Opera House on 0845 127 2190 or www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk. More details about the films can be found at www.buxtonfilm.org.uk
