QUESTIONS have been raised over whether the new speed limit reductions in and around Whaley Bridge are actually making the roads safer.
As part of a nationwide safety review, Derbyshire County Council recently reduced the limit of the A6 either side of Furness Vale from 40mph to 30mph.
The move follows a reduction along the main stretch of the A5004 Long Hill from 60mph to 50mph.
But at a meeting of Whaley Bridge Town Council last Thursday, Chairman Jake Walsh said: "We have been getting an awful lot of comments and feedback about the new speed limits, with people saying they cannot overtake, and if they do they are breaking the speed limit.
"People are saying it is dangerous, and they are questioning whether it is going to be safer."
Commenting on the speed limit reduction through Furness Vale, resident Dudley Garratt said: "The problem now is that drivers are fed up of crawling along by the time they approach the village, and they are either driving too close or trying to overtake."
Mr Garratt also questioned why there was no yellow box junction where Station Road meets Buxton Road, or a 20mph limit outside Furness Vale Primary School.
Councillors agreed to forward his concerns to Derbyshire County Council.
