A WITTON goal deep into second-half injury time forced Buxton's vital play-off semi-final tie right down to the wire on Tuesday night.
With 90 minutes of play gone, Buxton were leading by a Neil Ross goal before Witton managed to pull an equaliser out of the bag through Adam Warlow.

Half an hour of extra time followed, but with no further goals, the game was left to be decided on penalties as Buxton held their nerve to set up a mouthwatering play-off final tie at Gateshead.

Buxton started the game brightly but it was Witton who made the first break, forcing a corner with just two minutes gone, Hartley collecting before a shot could be created. A few minutes later, Hartley was left injured after a clash with the on-rushing Warlow before Michael Towey produced a good effort with a long-range shot that went over the bar.

Ten minutes in to the match, a Scott Maxfield corner looked like it had been tapped into the net but home keeper Jon Kennedy managed to get a hand to the ball. Maxfield had another opportunity on 14 minutes with a free kick that just went wide and earned the visitors a corner.

Witton then had a couple of chances but good solid defending from Buxton smothered any threat from the home side.

Mark Lees, who worked hard all night, saw his good long range shot go wide just before the half hour mark and a few minutes later Buxton calls for a penalty after Terry Bowker was pulled back in the area were waved away.

With half time looming, Witton created some good pressure, forcing a good save from Scott Hartley after a corner as well as some superb defending from Buxton.

Jason Bradley had one of the best chances of the first half four minutes before the break but the ball just failed to dip enough to find the back of the net. Witton responded almost immediately through the impressive Junior Brown, who threatened throughout, but his well-curled shot just went wide.

Well into the additional time allocated in the first half, Anton Foster was pulled back by Witton's Rob Lloyd, earning Lloyd a booking and Buxton a free kick. Maxfield's excellent ball in was initially blocked by Kennedy who then dropped the ball, leaving Neil Ross to tap it home.

Witton had the best of the early opening exchanges after the break with a chance from a corner going wide and then Rod Thornley sending his shot over the net.

Anton Foster then went agonisingly close with a shot that just scraped past the net with around five minutes of the second half gone as Buxton settled back into their game.

The home side were awarded a free kick on 53 minutes just outside the box. Mark Peers stepped up to take it but his well-curled shot missed the target.

Then, with 59 minutes on the clock, it was Buxton's turn for a free kick. Scott Maxfield hit it well but Kennedy collected the ball before the visitors could reach it.

What an incredible game. Buxton were superb from start to finish and thoroughly deserved their victory. Have to sympathise with Witton's fans though who have had a real rollercoaster of a season.
Well done to John Reed, Clive Freeman, all the players, directors and everyone involved with the club.
Bring on Gateshead!! Can't wait for Saturday.
