Buxton 1 Burscough 0

BUXTON secured an all important win and £4,500 in prize money with victory over Burscough in the FA Cup on Saturday.
A single goal from Reuben Wiggins-Thomas, his first for the club, sealed victory in a game which saw few clear chances created by either side.

For the visitors their miserable afternoon was compounded by the loss of James Olsen who was sent off in the dying minutes of the match after receiving a second yellow card.

Neither side showed any real threat in front of goal in the first half, with Burscough, a league above the home side, restricted to long range efforts that were way off target.

The introduction of Steve Smith with Tommy Agus reverting to full-back saw improved passing from the Bucks.

Their best chance of the half came on 41 minutes from a Tommy Agus corner which was only half cleared by the Burscough defence. The ball fell to Michael Towey on the edge of the area but his fiercely struck shot was just wide of the post.

Moments later Burscough had Scott Hartley under a rare bit of pressure as the keeper fumbled a cross but quickly recovered.

At the start of the second half it was clear the team were fired up and within five minutes had made the all important breakthrough.

Wiggins-Thomas linking up well with Grant Black made no mistake in firing home from a tight angle.

Burscough had another long range effort but still could not make any real impact although the second half saw both teams raise their games.

Buxton's bench were incensed, when the referee failed to stop play with a player down injured, on 75 minutes. Niall O'Brien lay on the ground after what appeared to be clash of heads as a furious John Reed tried to get the referee's attention. O'Brien continued but was substituted ten minutes later.

Just after the sending off Michael Towey almost made it 2-0 but his chip over the keeper went just over the bar, following a good cross from the goalscorer.

The win has earnt Buxton at home tie in the next round when they will be hoping to further their bid for cup glory and generate more income for the club with £7,500 to be paid to the winners of the match

Buxton: Hartley, Black, Maxfield (41 Smith), Lees, Anderson, O'Brien (85 Griffiths), Wiggins-Thomas, Towey, James (68 Balfe), Turley, Agus.
