A GAVIN Knight hat-trick helped holders Buxton through to the next round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
Buxton went into the game in high spirits, fresh from their seven-nil victory over Durham City on Saturday, and their free scoring exploits continued against the Derby-based side.
The home side certainly had the best of the play in the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to capitalise on a spell of pressure.
Steve Ridley's half attempt from long range narrowly missed the target on eight minutes before a one handed save by visiting keeper Darren Keeling denied the Bucks on 16 minutes.
Then, with 27 minutes on the clock, the deadlock was broken.
Good link-up play saw the ball fall to Mark Reed who made no mistake in tapping it past Keeling to open the scoring. And the Bucks added a second two minutes later through Knight.
Knight had a good chance to add to the score when he found himself with only Keeling to beat, but his shot was easily saved.
As half time approached, the visitors managed to pull a goal back.
Keeling's goal kick up the pitch was flicked on by Simon Leatherland past Buxton keeper Chris Backhouse to make it 2-1 with 38 minutes gone.
Five minutes after the restart, Buxton extended their lead, Knight firing an excellent shot past Keeling. And he completed his hat-trick on 62 minutes with a little flick-on which Keeling could do nothing about.
Buxton then seemed to relax a little too much and the visitors took full advantage, netting twice in two minutes. Simon Leatherland grabbed his second goal of the night with a header past Backhouse on 66 minutes before Jim Slack netted on 68 minutes to pull it back to 4-3.
But Buxton weren't done yet and Ridley added the fifth goal of the night on 85 minutes from a free kick.
And Reed rounded off the scoring in stoppage time after firing a Knight cross home.
Buxton: Backhouse, Black, Wilcox, Ridley, Anderson (Maxfield 54), Millar (Towey 45), Proffitt (Stevens 45), Lugsden, Reed, Knight, McGaw. Attendance: 142.
