Hednesford Town had gone into the lead in injury time midway through the seven additional minutes, through Danny Harvey's header.
But the final twist was when Harvey conceded a penalty in the final minute.
Town keeper Stuart Brock saved Knight'
s kick and was mobbed by his joyous team mates who realised they were now top of the Unibond Premier League.
It was tough on Buxton and manager John Reed who had kept faith with the same team that so convincingly beat Camell Laird on Saturday.
Buxton were under pressure straight from the kick off. A cross by Sean Platt from the right was miskicked by Tyrone Barnett however he did manage to tap the ball towards Ross Draper who over ran the ball allowing a defender to clear.
Tony Bowker conceded a free kick which was taken by Louie Briscoe, but it hit a defender and was cleared.
The Bucks created a chance with a deep cross from the left wing by Scott Maxfield but the danger was cut out by a glancing header back to Stuart Brock by Tom Marshall.
Buxton's James Turley attempted a shot, but his effort went over the crossbar
Scott Hartley then saved well from Briscoe.
Town went ahead in the 26th minute after Briscoe won the ball in midfield and after using his strength to hold off a defender laid a pass to Barnett who from 20 yards hit a firm low shot which found the net after taking a deflection off Bowker's heel.
Buxton equalised in the 38th minute against the run of play when a long ball into the Pitmen's penalty area caused confusion and Michael Towey managed a shot which took a deflection.
The Pitmen had the ball into the net shortly after half time but Briscoe's effort from 20 yards was ruled out for a foul on the keeper by Barnett. Hartley hit his head on the ground and was out cold for a minute or two. After nearly five minutes treatment the game resumed.
On the hour mark, Buxton made a double substitution but it was player who had been on since the start who nearly scored an unexpected goal.
Decio Gomes who was having another excellent game at the back for the Pitmen was holding up Gavin Knight but the Buxton player stole half a yard and sent a chipped shot from the outside of the right hand side of the penalty box which bounced off the top of the Pitmen's crossbar.
This gave Buxton great heart and they started to enjoy a large amount of possession. Nathan James headed over a cross from Grant Black then Knight tried his luck with a 30 yard effort which went wide.
Hartley then tipped over a header from Harvey and then denied a Tom Marshall header by making a diving low save.
The only booking in the game came in the 80th minute when Tom Marshall was cautioned for a foul on Scott Maxfield.
When the board went up for seven minutes added on time no one could have envisaged the excitement that was about to unfold.
