Barnsley included a number of thei
r FA Cup semi final team, new £1 m signing striker Ian Hulme and several imports such as Brazilian defender Souza and Argetinian midfielder Hugo Colace, but Buxton did well throughout annd finished both halves on top.
Passing soccer was the order of the day for both sides as the pitch played superbly, despite the day's monsoon. Yet it was a piece of individual skill which gave Barnsley the lead. Ex-Premiership striker Jon Macken beat two defenders to fire home after 23 minutes.
Determined defending and fine goalkeepin from Scott Hartley prevented a doubling of the lead annd on 38 minutes Buxton equalised as trialist Gavin Knight fastened onto a Steve Brodie long ball to score with a shot as impressive as Macken's. Thereafter the home side enjoyed their best spell of the game and Mark Hulme went close with a header from a Maxfield corner.
Interval team changes did not lessen the entertainment with Barnsley regaining the lead thjrough promising youngster Jamil Adam. And he scored again at three quarter time.
It was Macken who completed the scoring 10 minutes later – but Mark Hulme twice went close for Buxton as they continued to make openings.
Buxton continue their programme of friendly matches with two home games against Cheshire opponents. On Saturday July 19 Blue Squae side Northwich Victoria are the visitors and next Tuesday Macclesfield Town visit the Silverlands (7:30pm).
