Prescot Cables 2 Buxton 0

BUXTON'S urgent need for re-enforcements of quality were well illustrated on wet and windy Merseyside on Tuesday night.
The struggling hosts were bottom of the table without a win to show in any of their first nine fixtures, but deserved their victory and also kept a clean sheet.

Previously they had leaked the equivalent of three goals a game.
For once, an accusi
ng finger should be pointed at goalkeeper Scott Hartley who should have done better with preventing both goals.

But Prescot were the better side and their nippy forwards, passing accurately, regularly found a space behind the visitors rearguard.

Only ineffective finishing prevented then scoring their second goal earlier than the 90th minute, which was when Darren Byers took advantage of a second Hartley error as he failed to deal with a cross.By contrast Buxton had looked a mediocre outfit with only Michael Towey and newcome Kris Matthews playing anything like their potential.

The absence of suspended striker Gavin Knight was conspicious and the Buxton forwards never looked like improving on the dismal record of just one goal in the last four matches.

Not one of the four forward players, or their subsitutes, seemed likely to prise open the Prescot defence. Prescot led after the 23 minute through Thomas Moore, with a curled 20 yard shot which inexplicable went under the body of the diving Hartley.

Bucks attempts at goal were far and far between.

Mark Lees first half volley went wide as did a Towey drive that eluded all.

And Greg Anderson should have scored ewith a shot after a corner in the 86th minute which might have earned the Bucks a draw. He missed and Prescot went to on to score in the final minute to clinch the game.

Buxton: Hartley, Black, Bowker, Anderson, Matthews, Wiggins-Thomas (Smith 45), Towey, Lees, Agus, Turley (Balfe 45), Bradley (Griffiths 69).
