BUXTON produced a superb controlled performance to claim all three points in their clash with Whitby Town in sunny North Yorkshire.
Whitby opened strongly, with Tom Raw prominent in their attacking moves. On five minutes a good cross from the left was punched clear by Hartley, with the swirling wind making life difficult for both keepers.

The Bucks first meaningful attack on seven minutes ended with new boy Danny Smith feeding the overlapping Grant Black, whose cross flew narrowly wide.

Knight was then judged offside when clear on goal as the Bucks began to press.

On 13 minutes good work by Walker and Brodie on the left resulted in Maxfield crossing at pace – the ball was cut out by Forster before it reached the lurking Knight.

A minute later the Bucks created another chance as a Brodie through ball split the Whitby defence, but keeper Escritt won the race to claim it. Whitby hit back on 15 minutes when Tinkler hit a snap shot from 30 yards over the bar.

A minute later Brodie hit another defence splitting pass to put Walker through on goal – but keeper Escritt again claimed the ball before he could strike.

Buxton continued to ask the questions of the Whitby defence and on 21 minutes, from their first corner, got their reward.

Maxfield drove the left wing flag kick to the far post, where Hume climbed high to head powerfully back into the six yard box and allow captain Towey to head home.

New boy Danny Smith then saw his 30 yard snap shot from the right fly narrowly over with Escritt beaten.

On 30 minutes Maxfield's long pass again stretched the Whitby back line and Knight's clever lob dropped a yard wide.

As the half drew to a close the best passing movement of the match involving six Buxton players ended in Maxfield's fine 30 yard drive being tipped over by the busy Escritt.

On 66 minutes Brodie shot narrowly wide from Walker's headed pass.

Whitby threatened briefly when a 20 yard shot by substitute Garvie moved in the air and struck Hartley on the collar bone, but Black hacked the rebound to safety before Brunskill could strike. Whitby sub Garvie then forced Hartley to produce a good save low to his right, but this 20 yarder proved to be Whitby's last meaningful strike.

Frustration began to disrupt Whitby's attempts to win possession as the Bucks midfield kept the ball for long periods.

Eventually referee Cook had to produce his yellow cards to both Raw and Tinkler following late challenges on Maxfield and Knight.

Buxton continued to dominate possession and create chances, and the points were sealed when Knight broke clear to finish impressively from 20 yards as Escritt left his line and attempted to challenge him.

Buxton: Hartley, Black, Maxfield, Hume, Anderson, Lees, Smith (Balfe, 88), Towey, Knight (McGuire, 90), Walker (Wilson, 63), Brodie. Subs not used: Griffiths, Stanley.

Attendance: 359.
