ECSTATIC Buxton boss John Reed was almost lost for words as his side lifted the Derbyshire Senior Cup on Tuesday night.
The Bucks beat Matlock Town 1-0 in their first Senior Cup final for 23 years to bring the trophy back to the Silverlands.

And Reed was almost speechless after such a positive end to a difficult season. "It's just an amazing feeling," he told the Advertiser. "I just don't know what to say.

"This is a great end to the season for us, it is just fantastic. I've been involved in ten cup finals now but this is probably one of the best. I am delighted and this sets us up fantastically now for next season.

"We've turned a mediocre season into a very good season now and won the cup for the town. The fans have been absolutely brilliant.

"It wasn't the best performance but at the end of the day we've won the cup. We did have a game plan and came in at half time and had a few words but the players responded fantastically.

"Gav Knight could have had a couple of goals, Mark Reed could have had one and Neil Stevens could have one.

"Scott Hartley kept us in the game in the first half. I think Gregg Anderson and Tommy Agus were absolutely outstanding as was Scott Hartley. I would give Scott man of the match and I don't give him many."

And Reed's comments were echoed by assistant manager Clive Freeman. He said: "I thought the game was very even really and the only difference was probably the goalkeepers. Scott Hartley was outstanding and probably kept us in it with two or three excellent saves.

"It was a typical cup final with nothing in it.

"I'm made up now though because six weeks ago we were in a bad spot and now we've turned that upside down and had a really good end to the season.

"It's just great and its brilliant for all the people behind the scenes because they work so hard."

Is this the same man that told us some of his team did not want to play in this match because of the location?

Is this the same man who moaned about our fans earlier this season?

Is this the same man, through these pages, that reckoned the fans did not have the nerve to tell him straight what a mess he was making of things?

Is this the same man who has publically slated most of our players while removing any modicum of blame from himself?

This 'win' is the worst thing that could have happened, he can argue that he now has a platform from which to build rather than the obvious truth of a mediocre season with HIS team and the rightful outcome of a copy of his P45 following him out the door.

The astonishing game of football.

So many questions 'Plompy'. (Out of curiousity, why don't you use your real name?)

1)He said it would be hard to lift the players after they were all keyed up for Pride Park. To end up playing the game 10 days after the end of the season was difficult for players and supporters alike.
2) I'm a fan and don't recall him 'moaning' at fans. Far from it in fact. You'll be right though. Your sort usually are.
3) He meant people hiding behind keyboard nicknames (bit like you 'Plompy')If you want to discuss football with the management team they are always willing to do so after ANY match. No problem.
4)Yes he has blamed players. He's also apologised if he has upset any of their fragile egos. These same players though were all willing to put pen to paper again to play for John and Clive. Don't let that get in the way of your personal attacks though. You go for it 'Plompy'.

Use your REAL name you coward!!

'Mr Gill', I would remind you that name calling is not really an appropriate way to defend and articulate a point you wish to make.

As I said, 'football is an astonishing game' - full of ups and downs, your passion does you credit but what I've seen this year alienates me and for the first time in many years and I won't be bothering with Buxton FC, it was not an easy decision to reach.

Teams are just that, they are collections of individuals bonded through a common cause, I did not see a lot of evidence of that under the present regime, I did not see any notion of collective responsibility shown over the last few seasons and I stand by all my points, the fact that I choose to make them under an assumed name is justified retrospectively in terms of your original response. To me, these are points that are fundamental to my appreciation of football as a team sport.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'your sort', despite that I completely accept your right to respond politely and that's what's great about having an opinion. Even one such as yours. :-)

However, here's to next season.
