Buxton 1st XI boosted its chances of survival with a much-needed win away at Hawk Green, to complete a league double over the reigning champions.
Hawk Green batted first on an excellent batting wicket and raced to 62-0 off ten overs, before Matthew Poole (2-59) removed both openers in the same over to bring Buxton back into the game.
Despite the home side scoring at a healthy rate throughout, the Bucks managed to regain control with Scott Mackenzie (3-66) and Nick Smith (5-40) ensuring that wickets fell with regularity.
Hawk Green was eventually bowled out for 214 in the final over which was perhaps 40 runs below par.
Buxton’s chase faltered early with the dismissals of Luke Smith, then Bob Marsden (25), to reduce the visitors to 54-2, but a match winning stand of 163 between Julian Burgess (86 not out) and Amrit Singh (98 not out) in only 25 overs saw Buxton win comfortably with ten overs to spare.
Burgess batted fluently throughout, whilst Singh was his usual aggressive self, striking eight sixes and depleting Hawk Green’s supply of match balls in the process.
Next up for the Bucks is a home fixture versus Hazel Grove.
