Sports students at the University of Derby Buxton are kicking off their careers with a unique insight into how top soccer outfits work behind the scenes.

Senior Sports Lecturer Celena Dell has arranged highly sought-after placements for students to observe how a professional football club youth academy and medical department operate.

Students witnessed first-hand the day-to-day running of the department which works with football stars of the future, identifying the roles and responsibilities of different members of the multi-disciplinary support team.

“Everyone wants to work in football, but this shows all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes,” said Celena, whose own work at the youth academy before she joined the University opened its doors for her Buxton students.

“It’s not just about the glamour of the matches – there are a lot of long hours. It’s giving them an input from a professional football club that is unique.”
