One group of Buxton juniors had a successful weekend during the final round of the Derbyshire Cross Country mini-league at Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston recently.
Buxton had three local boys competing in the series as part of Chesterfield AC’s team.
Scoring a clean sweep with a hat-trick of first places was the under-13 Derbyshire Champion Will Tighe.
Elliot Meylan also won his category (Under-15 boys) having scored a brace of seconds and a first in the final races.
Also putting in a strong performance was Jacob Buckley as he came sixth overall in the under-15s.
The league is a friendly and informal cross country environment for novice and experienced young runners alike coming from a variety of Derbyshire schools and clubs.
Now in its 11th year, the league has helped develop local young athletes, many of whom have gone on to enjoy regional and national success in the sport.
It also gives many their first taste of competitive cross country.
The series comprises of three matches, with runners’ points being totted up at the end.
Elsewhere, during the East Midlands Regional Sportshall Finals in Grantham, Meres, Will and his brother James both represented Derbyshire.
The Sportshall Regional Finals provide an indoor multi-event competition helping budding athletes to develop athletics based skills.
All teams are bidding for a place at the UK Final and James was part of the winning under-11’s team who are now the East Midlands Champions.
Will was part of the winning under-13’s team and will now go on to represent Derbyshire in the UK Sportshall Final at Sportcity, Manchester in April.
The boys all train with Buxton and District Athletics Club twice a week.
