Sheen cause upset at championships

LOCAL Tug of War teams returned from the National Outdoor Tug of War Championships in Blandford, Dorset, with another impressive haul of medals.

The Sheen men's and ladies teams were competing at the event, not only for the honour of becoming national champions, but also to earn the right to represent England at the European Championships in September.

The Sheen men's team won gold in the catchweight event, winning their first national outdoor title for 25 years, beating Bosley in the final by two ends to one in an even and competitive match.

Sheen certainly caused one of the biggest upsets of the day by winning the catchweight event in one of the best finals of the day.

Sheen later added a silver medal in the 720 kilos weight class, finishing behind Bosley who took the gold. The Bosley team contained Buxton men Ian Hulme and Steve Morten.

Bosley also won the silver medal in the 640 kilos event, losing out to Felton Eccles from Somerset in the final, but they rounded off the day by winning a second gold medal in the 680 kilos weight class, defeating Felton Eccles in the final.

This was a milestone gold medal for Bosley, making it a 50th national outdoor title for the team.

Sheen Ladies won the silver medal in the ladies 520 kilos weight class, and bronze in the ladies 560 kilos weight class.

The ladies had more of an uphill task in defending their titles this year, as they have been focusing on their preparations for the World Games in July, which is for ladies indoor tug of war, so to come away with silver and bronze medals behind Bedford Ladies was a good achievement.

Bosley will now go on to represent England at the European Championships in Assen in September.

They have the choice of representing England at either 680 kilos or 720 kilos.

Should they select the 680 kilos weight class, Sheen would then be invited to represent England at 720 kilos after finishing as runners-up in that weight class.

The next big event for the teams will be the AAA championships in July.
