SHEEN men’s and ladies tug of war teams have celebrated a gold-medal haul at the UK Indoor Tug of War Championships, which took place recently in Huddersfield.

The men represented England A in the 680 kilos weight class, while the ladies represented England A in the ladies 540 kilos weight class.

The two teams later joined forces to represent England A and England B in the 600 kilos 4+4 weight class.

Sheen Ladies were first in action as England A, winning the competition in convincing style, without dropping an end.

They defeated Scotland A in the final, winning 2-0.

Sheen men, as England A, took part in the 680 kilos weight class. Sheen went through the group in relative comfort, beating all teams before them to progress through to the semi-finals ahead of Scotland A, England B and Northern Ireland A.

In the semis, England A defeated Northern Ireland A, while Scotland A defeated England B.

In the final, Sheen took the first end in relative comfort, however things were not quite so straight forward in the second end as a costly slip by England allowed Scotland to level the score.

This set up a hotly-contested third end, which went to over three minutes before England edged Scotland over the line.

In the mixed 600 kilos weight class, Sheen men’s and ladies teams joined forces to form the England A and B teams. Both performed strongly, reaching the semi-finals along with Scotland’s A and B teams.

In the semi-finals, England A defeated Scotland B, and England B defeated Scotland A, to set-up an all-England final, which was won by England A to cap off a good day for the Sheen teams.

Under-23 pullers from the area also got their England call as they were invited to represent the England Under-23 development team in the men’s 600 kilos competition as England C.

The team competed with distinction, and although they did not progress to the semi-finals to compete for a medal, they were not an easy team to beat.

Team members from the area included Tom Knott, Richard Torr, John Brassington and Tom Belfield.
