More than 700 school pupils are expected to compete at the Derbyshire Winter School Games.
The county event, which is part of the national School Games programme, will be held at Moorways Sports Centre in Derby on Wednesday March 21.
Pupils from primary, secondary and special schools across Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Derby, Derbyshire Dales, Erewash, High Peak, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire will take part, representing their areas in disability swimming, indoor rowing, quick sticks hockey or sports hall athletics. Intra-school and inter-school competitions are currently taking place to determine which schools will qualify to enter a team to represent their area in each sport.
Cllr Carol Hart, Chair of Derbyshire Sport, said: “The Derbyshire Winter School Games will be a great celebration of competitive sport in the lead up to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“It will be fantastic to see so many young people taking part in sport, and also in the cultural activities which are being planned as part of the opening ceremony, the educational workshops and in the organisation and officiating.”
Around 100 young leaders will also support the running of the event, taking on roles such as time-keepers, scorers and umpires.
