Sailing siblings are on the same wavelength
Buxworth brothers Lewis and Harrison Coppinger feel their natural telepathy gives them an advantage over other sailors in the heat of competition.
The pair have just won the Derbyshire Youth Series, sailing at the county’s top sailing clubs over the last six months to win the under-18s title.
Held over ten events on testing inland waters including Burton, Carsington, Swarkestone, Ogston and their own club at Toddbrook, the teenagers mastered all conditions to lift the prestigious trophy.
Helm Lewis said: “The best sailors are at one with their boats and the best teams are at one with each other and being brothers we have a better understanding. It’s a great advantage we intend to make the most of.”
Crew Harrison added: “In the heat of battle Lewis can raise his voice.
“All helms do it, it’s part of the sport, but some crews might not like that and find it distracting.
“However, I know him inside out and it means nothing to me.”
The boys, both pupils at Hillcrest Grammar School in Stockport, say their ultimate aim is to race in the Olympics.
“You ask any young sailor what their ambition is and it is obviously to race at the Olympics,” they added.
“This country has so many great sailors and we would like to join, but it isn’t going to be easy.”
Hillcrest Grammar School Director of Sport Simon Crane said: “Lewis left us last year and Harrison is now in his final year at Hillcrest, and throughout their time at the school they were both close friends and close rivals.”
