Buxton 2nd XV 24, Macclesfield RUFC 4th XV 22
BUXTON Seconds remain top of the league after overcoming stiff opposition in the form of Macclesfield 4th XV.
The hosts registered first, breaking out from their own 22m area, A Lofty adding to his impressive tally.
Macclesfield replied with a score of their own which they converted, quickly followed by a penalty to increase the gap.
Leading the Buxton charge was D Corthorn, a constant thorn in Macclesfield’s side with some excellent tackles. B Austin and H Gould at half backs were eager to run the ball, even from their own 22. T S-Jervis and debutant James looked accomplished giving Macc’s half backs a torrid time. Some long-range kicking kept Macc on the attack, and their pressure earned them another score.
Superb backs play from H Corthorn and J Pollitt set-up the next score. Pollitt smashed his way through several defenders to touch down under the posts. Corthorn converted.
Davies, Scrimshaw and Chapman had the Macclesfield front row where they wanted them, forcing them in to personnel changes. Kirten and skipper Burton were excellent in the line securing the ball on every throw.
A line-out in Buxton’s half set up play in their own half. The ball was whipped out to A Parkes who outpaced his markers to score his first senior try for the club, H Corthorn converted.
After the break, Macclesfield took advantage of some sloppy play to gather and score under the posts.
Buxton replied almost immediately. A scrummage in midfield was won by Buxton. H Gould gathered at the base and set off. He dummied his opposite number and ran on to score a great individual try. H Corthorn converted. H Corthorn relieved pressure with some outstanding kicking out of hand, A Lofty battled his way upfield and S McKenna’s tackles halted any meaningful attacks. D Corthorn charged down a late drop goal attempt.
