South Lancashire & Cheshire League Division Three: Knutsford 0, Buxton RUFC 1st XV 39
A CLINICAL and effective display saw promotion-chasing Buxton move into second place outright in the table, with just one game remaining.
From the kick-off, Buxton blasted through the defence and worked well to score two quick tries through full back and man of the match G Mellor.
Knutsford tried to get back into the game, but the visitors stood strong with G Passey, I Scott and J Degroot tackling anything that moved. S Edge leapt like a salmon in the lineout for a fine steal, enabling Buxton to clear their lines.
Buxton ventured forward on the attack once more with good running from P Storer, C Rabbits and S Meek making hard yards up the pitch and yielding three points after a Knutsford infringement.
From the restart, the whole Buxton team combined to power their way up field to score via the prolific A Burford. With that score and conversion, the scoring for the half was complete.
With play resumed, quick-thinking and guile sent G Mellor over for his third try, which he then converted, to seal the much-needed bonus point.
Buxton now looked more comfortable, putting together good phases of play which was marshalled by T. Summerfield, who almost scored himself from a tap penalty. However, from the resulting scrum, the backs strung together a good move to put T Waters away for another score.
Knutsford almost avoided the whitewash when they were awarded a kickable penalty, but the ball flew wide.
The game settled down, but still there were flashes of danger from the visitors as captain R McCoy made a nuisance of himself in the loose, winning good turnover ball with which P Campbell launched a pin-point accurate up and under to almost set-up J Torrance for a fine score, but the ball went forward.
Knutsford then conceded a penalty which was fired into touch for a Buxton lineout. M Baldwin immediately sprinted towards the line with defenders falling off him to score the final try of the afternoon.
