Hope Valley take positives from narrow defeat

Burnage 3rd XV 22, Hope Valley 1st XV 17

VALLEY travelled to Burnage for what turned out to be an excellent, closely-fought game on their artificial surface.

The match was played on a knife-edge, with Hope’s points coming from a superbly-finished try from Johnson and other scores from Hodgson and Corthorn. McGuigan added one conversion.

Hutchinson was unlucky not to clinch it, just missing out on a try in the final minutes.

Valley can take plenty of positives into Saturday’s home game at Castleton against Wirral 3rd XV.

Hope Valley Hawks 12, Tyldesley 3rd XV 27

The Hawks played host to a Tyldesley side which, up until last year, had been in the first teams’ league, and their experience showed with some clinical finishing to lead 22-0 at the break.

Valley fought back, with some excellent work from Rawson at scrum-half and the La Grange brothers. The Hawks’ pack constantly pressurised the visitors’ line, with Somerton and Russell crossing for tries, one of which was converted.

They had the measure of the visitors in the scrum, but Tyldesley held on, and only managed one breakaway in the second half.

The Hawks travel to Village Spartans on Saturday.
