South Lancashire & Cheshire League Division Three: Buxton 1st XV 75, Helsby 3
BUXTON put 11 tries past 12-man Helsby at Sunnyfields on Saturday.
The home side capitalised on the perfect conditions with an early score by T Waters.
Helsby struck back with a penalty following an infringement, and then a combination of handling errors from the home side and rigid defence by the visitors kept Buxton at bay until T Waters struck.
Buxton made good use of their numerical advantage as they went on to score a further four tries before half-time and sealed the bonus point in the first 25 minutes courtesy of P Campbell, and J Degroot who jinked his way over the line from 30 metres out.
Campbell, not wanting to be outdone, then outpaced the defence down the wing from 50 metres out to score for his second of the afternoon.
Helsby never let their heads drop, but a try was not to be on despite periods of good possession.
T Waters completed his hat-trick before the half-time whistle, and the try was converted to give Buxton a 40-3 lead.
When play resumed, Buxton’s vaunted phase play made a welcome appearance. With this, the backs were able to score through A Burford.
G Mellor was next up, capping a fine game with incisive running to add another try to his collection of conversions.
Helsby were still putting up something of a fight, making more than their fair share of tackles and using what ball they had effectively to make ground, but there was no way around the solid defence of the home side.
They repelled each attack with a turnover that would pin the visitors back until their defence was breeched again for another score via the forwards, who finally claimed one for themselves.
The scoring didn’t relent with Waters going in for his fourth and Burford getting his second after good bits of footwork from the pair.
Helsby looked for the consolation with intent, but try as they might the chance never came.
