South Lancashire & Cheshire League Division Three: Capenhurst 10, Buxton RUFC 1st XV 27

AN UGLY day at the office for Buxton saw them leave Capenhurst with a bonus-point victory.

First blood went to Buxton as Mellor slotted a penalty early on.

The game then turned after Scott was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle.

Capenhurst took advantage of the extra man, driving a five-metre scrum over the line and also picking up a penalty to lead 10-3.

The momentum changed again once Scott returned. A series of quick offloads and barn-storming runs from Lomas, McCoy Meek, Storer and Degroot pushed Buxton deep into enemy territory.

The forwards then set the ball up for scrum half Campbell to dart under the sticks for his first try.

Buxton began the second half strongly, setting up forward phases devised in training to release Toz, Passey, Austin, Holiday, Ives and Mellor. Boomtown came on in the second row to bolster the scrum and did a sterling job, combining well with Jason Meir to give Buxton the upper hand in the scrum.

An Ian Scott break which was offloaded to Degroot saw Josh Degroot crash though under the posts for Buxton’s second try. Then Lomas, with a dynamic break down the wing, selflessly passed inside for Hodgson to score Buxton’s third.

From a ruck five metres short of the try-line, and with the home defence distracted, Cambell seized the opportunity to snipe through a gap for his second and the bonus point victory.
