Mancunians 10, Hope Valley Hawks 29
RUGBY league side Hope Valley Hawks secured a solid 29-10 win over 2010 regional champions Mancunians last weekend.
The visitors, with a scratch squad of only 14 players, started brightly in squally conditions, with a solid attacking platform gaining ground.
Tommy McGuigan opened the scoring with a trademark chip and gather to make it 4-0, as the Hawks looked up for this match, with strong running from Hopkinson and solid defending by Wells and Boam.
A missed tackle gave Mancunians an easy try to take a 6-4 lead, but this was short-lived as McGuigan scored his second try, supporting a strong run down the middle by Boam, voted League Player of the Month, to make it 8-6. Another rampaging run by Boam released Williams to score, making it 12-6 at the break.
The second half saw a great long-range individual try by Jay McGuigan, who also added the conversion.
With the score at 18-6, the Hawks had to defend strongly as Mancunians tried to create some momentum, but stout tackling from Mylnek and Palfi on debut held them back. Veteran Hunter covered good ground in a solid defensive display.
J McGuigan broke and was denied on the line, but when another strong Hawks run from Warren saw him held up, Boam in support scored a richly-deserved try to take the score to 22-6.
Maskrey was unlucky not to finish off a great passing move in the corner, and T McGuigan dropped a goal in front of the sticks. The home side stuck at it in a well-fought game, and with the Hawks tiring they scored out wide to narrow the score to 23-10.
The game was finished off in style with a fantastic piece of skill from T McGuigan for his hat-trick, chipping and wrong-footing the home side to catch and score. J McGuigan, not to be outdone, back-heeled the conversion.
