Dronfield Drifters up next for Hope Valley Hawks

HOPE Valley Hawks continue their new rugby league campaign on Sunday May 22 when they host Dronfield Drifters (kick-off 2.30pm) at Castleton.

Last weekend, the Hawks got their rugby league season underway with a 40-12 defeat at Leeds Akkies.

Despite some good tackling from Williams and Woodall, the Hawks conceded four tries without reply during a disjointed first half.

Good running from Warren and the captain Russell put pressure on the home side, forcing a scrum ten yards out, and Shires, the inspiration behind the team’s formation, forced his way over to fittingly score Hawks’ first ever try in the 13-man game.

Hawks trailed 26-4 at half time, but the second half was much more even, with Maskrey darting through to score the Hawks’ second to make it 32-8 and cancel out a Leeds breakaway.

Valley were making much more ground, with strong running from J Wain and tough tackling from Barnett.

More pressure from Evans, who ran hard at Leeds all game, saw him being held up short. Leeds capitalised on a Hawks mistake to score again, but a quick Hawks penalty saw Evans score out wide to make it 36-12. A final Leeds breakaway saw the game finish 40-12.

Hawks: Johnson, Grayson, Evans, Woodhouse, Warren, Orton, Shaw, Shires, Russell (c), Hunter, Williams, Woodall, Sampson. Replacements J Wain, T Wain, Maskrey, Barnett, Allen, Elliott.
