Rick edges final frame decider to take singles title
BUXTON and District Pool League held its annual presentation night at The Working Men's Club last Friday, along with the final of the Singles KO between Rick Rogers (The Parks) and Andy Jones (White Lion).
After the first three frames, Andy led 2-1, needing only one more for victory.
The fourth frame was a drawn out affair with both players struggling to produce a winning clearance. Eventually Andy potted an outstanding long red which resulted in him having a shot at black to clinch victory, unfortunately he missed, leaving Rick to clear up and force a final frame decider.
Andy decided to break which led to him going in off the break. The balls had split well and Rick was able to take full advantage by clearing up to win 3-2.
In the semi-finals, Andy beat Lee Stobbart (Triangles WMC) with Rick beat Rob Phillips (The Parks).
The doubles KO was also won by Rick Rogers along with his partner Tony Delichoppia who beat fellow team mates from The Parks and defending champions, Betsy and John Russell, 3-0 in the final.
This means Rick and Tony win back the title that they had lent them last year.
The losing semi-finalists were Glen Mellor and Matt Watson along with Steve Bennett and W Howden (all from The Foresters).
In the First Division, it was business as usual for the Parks as they secured a tenth consecutive league title. Runners-up were Queens Dove.
Most wins for the division was won by N Fisher (Foresters A) with 17 out of 20, which was a remarkable achievement as he had lost the first two games of the campaign.
He capped off a good season by also winning The Captain's Cup.
The First Division most wins KO was won by Betsy (The Parks), finally winning the one title that had eluded him for so many years.
The Second Division was won by the Spartans, ahead of Great Rocks.
This was a close division all season with Spar Bar A pushing the top two after they themselves had led the division for most of the season, but fell away at the end.
Most wins with 16 out of 20 was won by TC and Jay Waplington (Spartans) and S Farnsworth (Great Rocks).
The Second Division most wins KO was won by Dion Doyle (Stickmen).
The Third Division was dominated by White Lion C who lost only one of their 18 matches, resulting in them finishing 23 points ahead of runners-up The Liberal Club.
Most wins with 17 out of 18 went to Andy Jones (White Lion).
The Third Division most wins KO was won by Steve Bennett, with the ladies most wins won by C Bennett (both from Foresters KS).
The Team KO led to perhaps the biggest shock of the season as The Parks, looking for their eighth consecutive team KO title, were beaten in the final by the Blazing Rag 4-3, who played very well and fully deserved their victory.
The consolation cup was won by Great Rocks FC after they beat the White Lion A in another close final 4-3.
