After rain disrupted the opening two week’s fixtures, Disley 1st XI’s season in the Meller Braggins Cheshire Cricket League Division Three finally began in positive fashion as victory over Pott Shrigley followed a remarkable tie against Stretton.
The side is placed third in the table and has enjoyed a particularly strong start with the ball, spearheaded by Simon Hare who has claimed figures of 5-49 and 5-21 in the opening weeks alongside excellent contributions from Xan Wood and Toby Carson.
Neighbours Pott Shrigley could only muster 49 runs against a rampant pace attack on Saturday, a total comfortably overcome inside 18 overs – victory sealed with a huge six from the bat of Madusha Wettasinghe.
It made up for the previous week where a late batting collapse had cost the side a perfect start to the season.
League leaders Stretton were dismissed for 112 but, after a partnership from Andrew Clarke (43) and Jake Reynolds (25) took Disley to the brink of victory at 91-3, the Rams’ batting displayed some early-season rust on their way to a rare tie.
Disley will hope to build upon this positive start when they host Barrow at the Disley Amalgamated Sports Club this weekend.
