Poulson slips up as Ford opens a 25-point lead

ROUND five of the Darley Moor Motorcycle Road Race Club's Championship took place on Sunday and once again treated motorsport fans to an excellent days racing.

The Formula 400 Class kicked off the action with special guests for the weekend, the East Midlands Racing Association's (EMRA) Roadstock Championship lined up alongside. This championship was enjoying a race away from their normal venue of Mallory Park, on road legal machines with lights and number plates taped up.

High Peak rider Jamie Medhurst, who had an additional road legal machine alongside his regular race prepared Sound of Thunder bike, finished second in the first race, but took the chequered flag in the second outing despite being handed a ten-second penalty for overtaking under a yellow flag.

Chapel-en-le-Frith's Steve Poulson and Whaley Bridge's James Ford lined up alongside Medhurst in the Sound of Thunder class.

What could be a defining moment in the chase for the title came in race one. Poulson recovered from a slow start, in which he crossed the line fifth on lap one, to eventually lead by lap eight, recording the fastest lap of the race.

But he then missed a gear on the approach to the hairpin, depositing him in the gravel to wreck his chances of a points finish. Ford continued his good form, registering a win in race one, ahead of Medhurst, a result which they repeated in race two, with Poulson this time coming home in third.

A gap of 25 points has now opened up between Ford, on 72 points, and Poulson, on 40 points, but with 72 points still available Poulson's championship challenge is far from over. Medhurst occupies third spot, on 36 points.

Round six of the championship is scheduled for Monday August 30.
