Peak runners feel the heat in freezing conditions

Braving snowy conditions, three Buxton and District Athletic Club members trekked over to North Wales last weekend to take part in the popular Twin Piers 10K race.

The event starts at Llandudno and follows the sea front all the way back to Colwyn Bay, taking in the Little Orme en-route.

Running into an icy wind, Dave Ryan was first home in a time of 53:07, while Paul McWha clocked 56:58 and Suzy Turner finished in 63:58.

The conditions didn’t get any better for Saturday’s Kinder Trial event, the second in the Hayfield Fell Racing Championships, covering 11 miles and featuring climbs of some 2,000 feet over the distance. And with competitors having to use their orienteering skills in the snow, this was a true test of navigational ability.

Five Buxton AC members braved the conditions, with Don O’Brien leading them home in under three hours in 02:35:00. Frank Golden, Pete Bailey, Bev Golden and Dave Forshaw all ran together and finished in a time of 03:09:00.

• Weather permitting, the next Pavilion Gardens 5K event will take place at 9am on Saturday February 9, starting on Broad Walk in the Pavilion Gardens.

• The first event in the Buxton AC annual championship is the ‘Dream On’ Mile, which will start at 7.15pm on Wednesday February 13 on Broad Walk.
