IT’S BEEN a weekend to remember for Disley’s golden couple Sarah and Barney Storey.

Sarah won her second gold medal of the 2012 Games on Saturday in the 500m Time Trial, just hours after husband Barney collected his first as the sighted tandem pilot for Neil Fachie in the men’s B 1km Time Trial.

And Barney added a silver to his tally yesterday (Sunday) when he and Fachie were beaten by team-mates Anthony Kappes, from Chapel-en-le-Frith, and his sighted pilot Craig Maclean in a thrilling climax to the men’s individual B sprint at the London velodome.

In honour of the Storeys’ gold medal-winning triumphs, Royal Mail has painted two of its iconic red post boxes gold in their home village of Disley. Sarah’s is situated on the A6 Buxton Road, outside The White Lion pub, while Barney’s is located on Market Street.

Another post box has been painted gold outside Poynton High School, where Sarah was a student, in honour of her second gold medal.

Meanwhile, commemorative stamps celebrating the Storeys’ gold medal triumphs have gone on sale.

After picking up ParalympicGB’s first gold medal of the London Games on Thursday in the women’s C5 Individual Pursuit, Sarah, 34, beat American 500m specialist Jennifer Schuble by almost a second to take the 500m time-trial title on Saturday, her 20th Paralympic career medal and her ninth gold.

She said: “Sometimes when the pressure is off you do the things you least expect.”

Earlier in the day, Barney and Fachie set a new world record on their way to gold in the 1km Time Trial, but couldn’t repeat that feat during an all-Brit final in the men’s individual B sprint on Sunday, losing 2-0 to Kappes and Maclean.

Barney, 35, said: “That was always the goal: to get two British bikes in the final. Craig and Anthony were faster than us.”
