LONG distance specialists Mark Fitzgerald and Simon Moorhouse represented Buxton and District Athletic Club in last weekend’s gruelling ‘Dusk til Dawn’ race in the Peak District.

The 50-mile course, involving 9,000 feet of climbing, started and finished at Losehill Hall in Castleton, with the idea being to set-out as dusk falls and finish before dawn.

Fitzgerald finished in 13 hours and 50 seconds, while Moorhouse completed 45 miles before his torch failed and he was forced to retire due to the atrocious weather conditions.

l At the latest event in the North Staffs Cross Country League, held at Parkhall near Stoke, the Buxton Ladies’ team of Rachel Chatwin (13th), Emma Wentworth (48th), Emma Havenhand (53rd) and Bev Golden (68th) finished a fantastic joint first place in their division.

The mens’ team was led home by Steve Watson in 20th position, out of large field of 235 runners. Second home was Rob White (77th), followed by Mat Ivings (83rd), Richard Bouglas (125th), Mark Quince (169th), Pete Bailey (171st), Frank Golden (190th) and Paul McWha (230th). The team currently lie seventh in their division. Results by the juniors were equally impressive. In the under-11 boys category, Will Tighe was fifth, ahead of James Watson (30th), Edward Ivings (31st) and David Harris (41st), with the team finishing in seventh place. Luke Farrant came home eighth in the under-13 boys category, while Elliot Meylan was 18th.

Amy Quince was the sole Buxton under-13 girl participant, finishing 40th. The under-15 boys’ event saw Daniel Burt finish in 19th place, while Kieran Connell came home in 24th. Another member of the Watson family, Danielle, was a creditable ninth in the under-17 women’s race.

l On the roads, Sarah Guise completed the Hallowe’en Worksop Half Marathon in two hours, three minutes and 30 seconds.

l The next Buxton Pavilion Gardens 5K event will take place at 9am on Saturday November 10, starting and finishing on Broad Walk. Visit www.buxtonac.org.uk for details.
