Golf tribute to Big Mac
CAVENDISH golf course was in superb condition for the recent match arranged between the visiting team of the 'British Golf Collectors Society' and the 'Alister MacKenzie Society'.
The match was arranged to celebrate Dr MacKenzie who, in 1923, designed the Cavendish course by invitation of the 9th Duke of Devonshire, his task being to develop a new 18 hole course to replace the 9 hole course in Burbage.
MacKenzie went on to design golf courses in the US including the Augusta National where the US Masters is played each spring.
Cavendish, owned by its members, keeps hold of the traditional course architecture and are strong supporters of the 'MacKenzie Society' - the association of clubs playing courses designed by Dr A. MacKenzie.
Dr Hamilton of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews and captain of the visitors 'British Golf Collector Society' led his team wearing 'turn of the century' golfing attire and played with traditional Hickory-shafted clubs.
The visitors agreed that the course remains true to the architects' original design and proved that golfers who play with traditional equipment can enjoy a challenging match on the course.
The day resulted in a successful win for the 'Cavendish MacKenzie' team, 4 matches to 2. The day concluded with Dr. Hamilton presenting Paul Heathcote, the Captain of Cavendish, with a generous cheque from the players towards Junior golf activities at Cavendish.
