Flagg young cyclist Gregg Booker has captained the East Midlands to the silver medal in the inter regional youth cyclo-cross championships.

The 14-year-old King’s School Macclesfield pupil sacrificed his own personal ambitions to work in a support role for his teammates on a mixed road and cross country course in Milton Keynes, part of the B team that saw the A team riders break the tape first.

“That’s what you do in cycling. It’s just part of the sport’s philosophy. It’s what Chris Froome did for Bradley Wiggins and as captain I was honoured to do it for my team mates,” said Gregg modestly.

Gregg’s first love is mountain biking, and he trains with Matlock Cycling Club. He is hoping to ultimately make the Olympic grade.

He said: “I have been inspired by the great names of British cycling like Sir Chris Hoy, Chris Froome and Bradley Wiggins but more importantly for me by some of our local heroes such as the Olympians Annie and Tom Last, who you can often seeing out training when you’re on your training routes.”

Gregg is hoping to combine a potential future in cycling with an academic career. “I want to go to university, but I will have to see where my cycling takes me first. That’s my first love and my priority.”
