Disley paralympian is contender for Sports Personality of the Year prize
PARALYMPIAN Sarah Storey is one of 12 hopefuls in the running for this year’s prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.
Storey, 35, from Disley, rode to four cycling titles at this summer’s Paralympic Games in London to become Great Britain’s most successful female Paralympian, with a career haul of 11 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.
Fellow Paralympians Ellie Simmonds and David Weir, cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy, tennis star Andy Murray, athletes Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah, rower Katherine Grainger, golfer Rory McIlroy, boxer Nicola Adams and sailor Ben Ainslie make up the 12-strong list.
Following the announcement of the shortlist, Storey told the Advertiser: “I am delighted to be on such an incredible list of sporting greats.
“It is a testament to everyone who has supported and worked with me and I cannot thank them enough for helping to make 2012 such an incredibly memorable year.”
The star-studded Sports Personality of the Year awards ceremony, hosted by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding, will be broadcast live on BBC TV and radio from the ExCel arena in London on December 16.
The winner will be decided by a public vote on the night.
* Sarah Storey has also made the shortlist for two categories in the third Jaguar Academy of Sport Awards.
The cyclist has been nominated in the Most Inspirational British Sportswoman of the Year and British Sporting Performance for an Athlete with a Disability categories.
The winners will be announced during a ceremony at The Savoy in London on Sunday December 2.
