BUXTON Athletic Club’s under-11 boys’ team took gold at last weekend’s Derbyshire Cross Country Championships, held out of Markeaton Park, Derby.
The team comprised of Elliot Meylan, who finished third to take the bronze medal, with Jacob Buckley and Edward Ivings finishing fifth and tenth respectively. In the under-11 girls, Amelia Newbould ran well to finish ninth in her race.
Competing in the under-13 girls’ race, Helen Thornhill was seventh overall.
The under-13 boys’ race saw Stephen Mellor finish eighth, followed by Rhys Bowen (13th), Daniel Burt (18th) and Kieran Connell (19th).
In the senior women’s race, Buxton had a good turnout. Amy Whelan led the team home in 16th position, followed by Annemarie Claye (19th), Sheila Bradley (27th), Kirsty Forder (28th), Sarah Nicholson (34th), Emma Havenhand (36th), Emma Wentworth (38th) and Wendy Bainbridge (41st). Sheila also collected bronze in the ladies over-50 race.
There was also an excellent turnout for the men with in-form Rob White leading them home in 24th position overall. Second up for the team was Darren Hawkins (30th), followed by Mat Ivings (32nd), Mark Pursell (56th), Pete Bailey (69th), Roland Meylan (77th), Simon Moorhouse (79th) and Mark Babington (85th).
Continuing her brilliant form, former Buxton Junior Amy Mellor, now running for City of Stoke, led the field from the gun, and was a clear winner in the under-20 ladies race.
