U16s champion equals club’s course record

JUST days after winning the Derbyshire Boys Under-16s Championship, Cavendish Golf Club junior Ben Higgins equalled the course record in the Midweek Medal with a magnificent score of 64.

This same score was also attained twice in the previous Open Week by a plus-three golfer.

Higgins (64-2=62) finished ahead of Chris Thyer (71-6=65) and Paul Brindley (75-9=66) in the Midweek Medal, and has now reduced his handicap to one.

Results from the August Weekend Medal were - Division One: 1st, G Mather, 73-7=66; 2nd, W McFarlane, 76-10=66; 3rd, R Holmes, 69-2=67 and best gross score. Division Two: 1st, P Higgins, 80-13=67; 2nd, P Witcombe, 80-12=68; 3rd, J Etchells. 83-14=69. Division Three: 1st, R Lowey, 88-21=67; 2nd, C Pritchard, 85-17=68; 3rd, A Bradley, 91-22=69.

Mike Stephens won the Steve Doyle-Davidson Trophy, played on August 18, with a fine score of 81-18=63. Runner-up was Gerard Costello (83-18=65), ahead of Peter Freeman (79-13=66).

Richard Holmes (70) recorded the best gross score, while Paul Ward (net 69) won the prize for the best full handicap.
