FOUR High Peak Triathlon Club members travelled to the Lake District to compete in the prestigious Helvellyn Triathlon.

Not for the fainthearted, this race begins with a chilly one-mile lake swim, before a hilly 40-mile circuit and a brutal nine-mile run which scales England’s third highest mountain.

Nigel Critchlow, from Buxton, posted the best of the High Peak times, finishing in an excellent four hours and 43 minutes, followed closely by Liz Batt (4.51). Phil Blundell and Phil Shaw, also of Buxton, finished in very creditable times of 5.16 and 5.56 respectively.

* Members of High Peak Triathlon Club took part in the annual Matlock Sprint Triathlon, held on August Bank Holiday Monday.

The first High Peak adult club member home was Nigel Critchlow, finishing 22nd overall in a creditable time of one hour.

Top honours went to new junior member Michael Beech, from Matlock, whose sub one-hour time was exceptionally quick. Also performing well were Carol Vernon, Gloria Bevan and Nikki Dick, who claimed first in the ladies veterans’ section.

In the men’s section, Stefan Ledin, Tom Breakwell and David Davidson all finished with very respectable times. As overall male and female winners, Eugene Grant and Nicky Shaw both nominated local charities to be the recipients of over £500 raised on the day.
