A PEAK District swimmer has become one of the fastest freestyle swimmers in the UK in her age group.

Cate Read won silver medals in the 100 metres and 400 metres at the British Gas ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships, held at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, last weekend.

Read, 42, from Wardlow, near Tideswell, set personal best times for this year in both events - narrowly missing out on gold in the 100 metres by a mere one-tenth of a second.

A member of Matlock & District Swimming Club, Read trains as a triathlete with Racing TNT Triathlon Team.

She successfully completed the Half Ironman in Galway in 2011 and this year was successful in the UK Half Ironman at Wimbleball in Somerset, the Speedo “Big Triathlon” at Holmpierrepoint in Nottingham and the Vitruvian middle-distance triathlon at Rutland Water.

Last month, she won the Sheffield ‘Big Swim’ open water event and competed in the Rother Valley sprint distance triathlon.
