Strong display at league meeting

BUXTON & District Athletic Club fielded teams in the second race in the North Staffordshire Cross Country League, which was held out of Parkhall Country Park, Stoke, at the weekend.

Elliot Meylan was the club’s sole under-11 representative, finishing tenth out of 36 runners.

Steven Mellor was the first under-13 to finish in seventh place, followed by Daniel Burt (21st) and Kieran Connell (28th). The team are in fifth position overall.

Both the senior ladies and senior men’s teams are currently in seventh position after this second race.

Amy Whelan was the first lady home in 32nd place, ahead of Sarah Nicholson (55th), Wendy Bainbridge (87th) and Jayne Denby (116th).

Former Buxton junior Amy Mellor, now representing City of Stoke, had a superb run in the senior ladies race, finishing second.

The senior men’s team was led home by Steve Watson in an excellent 32nd place, ahead of Mark Cudahy (121st), Mark Pursell (124th) and Mark Halsey (139th).

Buxton was represented by seven runners in the Passing Cloud Fell Race. From a field of 200, Darren Hawkins had a brilliant run to finish in 11th place, ahead of Rob White (34th), Jason Tatton (56th), Mark Cudahy (66th), Mark Halsey (73rd), Roland Meylan (105th) and Rob Wallis (106th).

Simon Moorhouse and Mark Fitzgerald battled testing conditions as they took part in the Snowdonia Marathon. Simon finished in four hours, 32 minutes and 54 seconds, with Mark hot on his heels in a time of four hours, 32 minutes and 58 seconds.

Sheila Bradley (1:45:26), Mark Babbington (2:01:09) and Jarrod Roberts-Dinsley (2:05:08) all completed the popular and well-attended Worksop Half Marathon at the weekend.
