ENER-G Hockey League East Midlands 2: Derby Asterdale 1, Buxton 1st XI 2
BUXTON ground out a victory against a spirited Derby side, to make it three wins on the bounce.
This was a rather unconvincing display from the Bucks who will need to put in a much improved performance when they take on league leaders Ashby on Saturday. As it turned out, Buxton did just enough to get the three points.
Derby took the lead early on in the game when a lofted ball caused confusion in the Buxton defence, leaving M Chiu and J Davie to exchange passes before the latter slapped into the net.
It was thoroughly deserved too as Derby were playing well and Buxton were struggling to get into the game, the icy conditions not helping.
Eventually, the Buxton midfield managed to string a few passes together and started to take control. Browett and Orritt both missed good chances before Lowton equalised from a short corner. J E Wilton should have given the away side the lead but hit the post.
The winning goal came at the start of the second half. Lowton continuing his scoring streak, four in three matches, by nipping in and reverse-sticking it past the keeper.
Buxton then lost all shape and momentum. Derby pressed forward looking for an equaliser and at times were camped in the Buxton half. Were it not for some good defending by Mather, Lomas, Stewart and Jones, and some fine saves from Thyer, the score may have looked a lot different.
Buxton: S Thyer, P Jones, D Bedlehem, S Lomas, W Mather (c), J Stewart, L Saunders, D Lowton, J E Wilton, D Pathe, M Curzon, W Orritt, P Browett. Man of the Match: D Lowton.
